What a build is, and what it is not

A build is a starting point that already boots. Someone has chosen the framework,
picked resources that work together, configured them and shipped the result. What
it is not is a finished server: the economy numbers, the jobs, the rules and the
staffing are yours, and they are what makes one city different from another.

Check these before you commit

  • The framework it is built on. This is the decision you are inheriting, and it
  • is the hardest one to reverse later.
  • What is actually included. A resource list is the difference between a build
  • you can assess and a screenshot you cannot.
  • Updates. Whether the build is maintained, and what happens when the underlying
  • framework moves, decides how long it stays viable.
  • Licensed content. Anything escrowed or licensed inside a build carries its own
  • terms. Know what you can modify before you plan around modifying it.
  • Your own ability to maintain it. A large build is a large surface. If nobody on
  • your team can read the resources, the first conflict will be expensive.

Building instead

It boots and it is configured, which is the assembly work done. The economy balance, job setup, rules and staffing are still yours, and those are what shape the server players actually experience.

Can I change what is inside a build?

Usually in part. Escrowed or licensed resources inside a build carry their own terms, so check what is modifiable before planning around changes.

Which framework should I pick?

Whichever your team can maintain. The build's framework is the decision hardest to reverse later, so it matters more than any individual resource in the package.

Do builds get updates?

It depends on the build and is stated on its listing. Frameworks move, and a build that is not maintained gradually drifts from what current resources expect.

Is buying a build cheaper than assembling one?

It is usually faster. Whether it is cheaper depends on what you would otherwise buy separately, and assembling your own leaves you with a clearer picture of what is running and why.
